【MOTORING】Tesla Unveils the Model Y, an SUV That Will Cost Less Than $40,000

Reasons

The Model Y will be smaller than the Model X SUV and will reportedly have the ability to travel 300 miles on a single charge when it’s available in 2020

Last night, at Tesla’s design studio in Los Angeles, the best-selling electric car brand unveiled its latest future product, the Model Y. This vehicle, a small SUV, brings Tesla’s battery-powered lineup to four: a large and small sedan (Model S and Model 3, respectively) and a large and small sport utility vehicle (Model X and Model Y.) It does not, however, unify their model nomenclature.

The five-seat (base) and seven-seat (optional) Model Y will be underpinned by the same platform as the Model 3, but because it is taller and heavier, like nearly all SUVs when compared with their sedan counterparts, it will be about ten percent bigger and ten percent more expensive than the car version. The Model Y will be offered in a number of variants—Standard Range, Long Range, Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive, and Performance. Tesla claims that the Standard model, which won’t be on sale until spring of 2021, will be able to travel 230 miles on a single charge. The Long Range model is expected to travel around 300 miles on a charge when it appears in the fall of 2020. The Performance and all-wheel-drive models will appear around the same time and are expected to achieve 280 miles on a charge. Additional driver-assistance technologies will be available on all models as plus-cost options, the suites of which will run in the low four-figure range. Acceleration from 0 to 60 m.p.h. will run from 3.5 to 5.5 seconds, depending on power and trim.

The design of the Model Y appears to be based around that of the Model 3, with thickly creased and cut fenders and sleekly sneering headlamps. Thankfully, it will forego the problematic (if delightful and awe-inspiring) birdwing-like “falcon doors” featured on its bigger brother, the Model X. On the inside, the Model Y seems to adhere to the minimalist/parsimonious template that defines the Model 3, with a blank cockpit brightened only by a 15-inch horizontal touchscreen used to control nearly all interior functions.

The Model Y SUV is smaller (and less powerful) than its predecessor, the Model X SUV.

Tesla also announced Model Y pricing. The base vehicle will start at just under $40,000, and the top-of-the-line Performance model will start at just over $60,000. Since the compact luxury SUV is one of the most popular segments of the contemporary automotive marketplace, and one that continues to grow in popularity, Tesla can expect the Model Y to become its best-selling vehicle. It can also expect/hope it will provide the company many thousands of $2500 customer deposits for the new vehicle via the brand’s Design Studio configurator, starting tonight. We look forward to the opportunity to get behind the wheel as soon as we can.
